These are the Gallery Award winning photographs on display in The Art of Living Photography Show at ACCI Gallery in Berkeley, California from September 1 to 24, 2017. From portraiture to street photography, social documentary to pictorial, the works in this show illuminate how we live, where we live, and who we are.

Judging a competition is challenging and gratifying. Inevitably, there are many great photographs. It comes down to a lot of staring - at composition, at technical quality, at appropriateness to the theme. And all that staring leads to a relationship with the photographs.

In museums and galleries we rarely spend so much time staring at individual images. I invite you to spend time with each of these photographs. View them more than once. Be attentive to how your eye moves through the photograph. Where is your eye drawn, by the subject, the composition, the tones? How does the style of processing work with the subject matter? What are the historical and cultural connections?

It was a pleasure spending time with this collection of photographs.
